OUR CHURCH IN UNITED STATES

History :

As it is today, the diocese includes faithful from all the Middle East who settled in five successive waves, at the turn of the century, after the First and Second World Wars, after the constitution of the State of Israel and since the Lebanese crisis.

The first communities formed distinct groups according to the place of their origin. Thus it is that certain communities are almost entirely of Aleppine stock, like those at Utica, Central Falls and Paterson, others exclusively from the Bekaa, like those of Atlanta, Birmingham, Milwaukee, Akron and Cleveland, and others from South Lebanon, such as Danbury, Waterford and Lansing. On the other hand, other big centres like New York, Detroit, Miami and California, are mixed.

The first people to emigrate to the United States worked in the textile factories of Lawrence, Worcester, Chicago and Milwaukee, while their children, now perfectly assimilated to the American way of life, in general practise the liberal professions. This is particularly true of the last two waves of arrivals. A very small number have entered politics and the Civil Service. Their cultural and social level is very much that of their fellow American citizens.

Religious practice varies according to the parishes and to individuals. It can be said that a sizeable majority practise in our churches when they do not live too far away, for the factor of distance tends to work against us, particularly in view of the high cost of living. As for those who find themselves a long way from our organized parishes, and these it must be added form a majority, they are under the jurisdiction of Latin bishops. The figure of one hundred thousand Melkite-Greek Catholics is no exaggeration, particularly if one considers the most recent immigration.

The repeated visits of our Patriarch and of the bishop have done much to bring our faithful together. One thing should be noted: our community in the States is no longer the ethnic community which we know in the ?old country?. It is a reflection of the multi-cultural and multi-racial society of America, and our clergy also presents this image.
