OUR CHURCH IN CANADA

History:

Because of the emigration to Canada of many Orientals, among whom were numerous children of our Church, the Patriarchate has made great efforts over the last fifty years to bring together the many parishes scattered over this immense country, in order to give them a diocese of their own, with somebody at its head capable of taking over their administration, of organizing them, of uniting their forces and of setting up new centers of apostolate wherever the need might be felt.

It was in 1960 that Father George Coriaty S.B., who terminated his theological studies at the Salvatorian seminary at Methuen USA, was appointed parish priest of St Savior’s at Montreal. At this time it was only a small Melkite-Greek Catholic parish of about a thousand souls, including some Oriental Christians of other rites.

How much has been accomplished since then!

There was 15,000 Melkite-Greek Catholic faithful forming a magnificent parish full of life, among them a few hundred Copts and Chaldeans. The community has its archbishop, Michael Hakim, and the church of St Savior is now his cathedral!

What is more, the community has also developed in the other great towns of Canada. It now very important, without taking into consideration the massive immigration of the last two years, particularly from Lebanon.
